Finetuning Your Settings
Finetuning
During the rst three months and/or as directed by
your healthcare provider you should monitor and
record:
• Bloodglucoselevels(fasting,pre-meal,two
hours aer the start of your meal). Check over-
night blood glucose levels at least once monthly
or as directed by your healthcare provider
• Carbohydrategrams(recordperiodicallyto
check and review)
• Bolusdoses(meals,snacks,corrections)
• Basalrates
• Exercise/activity
• Illness,stress
• Hormonalchanges(PMS,menses)
Contact your healthcare provider as requested or
needed. Schedule oce visits as directed by your
healthcare provider.
Basal rate adjustments
NOTE: Always contact your healthcare provider to
discuss any adjustments to your basal rate(s) that
may be needed.
Periodically, you may need to adjust your basal
pattern(s). Use the guidelines below as directed by
your healthcare provider to help you determine nec-
essary changes.
Guidelines for testing your basal rate(s)
• Checkwithyourhealthcareproviderforspecic
instructions.
• DONOTmakebasalrateadjustmentswhenyou
are ill, have stress, or have hormonal changes.
• DONOTexerciseontheday(s)youareconduct-
ing a basal test unless you exercise on a regular
basis.
• Performa“BasalRateTest.”Youmayneedto
check your blood glucose hourly during a specic
period of time.
• DONOTeatfoodsordrinkliquidsthataect
your blood glucose levels. You will be “fasting” for
a few hours during your basal rate test.
NOTE: e pump will allow you to begin a basal
test when you have insulin on board. e fact
that there is insulin on board will be recorded in
the history log for the test.
• DONOTtreathighbloodglucoseunlessyour
result is greater than the value set by your health-
care provider. DO treat low blood glucose. You
may need to make basal rate adjustments if you ex-
perience hypoglycemia during the test. Repeat the
basal check test.
• Discontinuethetestifyourbloodglucoseresults
are not within your target for that particular time
of the day.
• Typicallyyouwouldtestyourbasalratesforthe
following four periods: Morning, Aernoon,
Evening and Overnight.
