Preparing for CozMore®
Treatment
Prompt treatment of hyperglycemia is essential.
When your blood glucose is above 250 mg/dl
(14 mmol/L):
• BolususingtheDeltecCozmo®insulinpumpand
your correction factor. You may need to adjust
your correction bolus and give yourself a larger
bolus than usual when you are ill. You may also
want to use the Correction bolus increase feature
described on page 110.
• Checkforketonesandcallyourhealthcarepro-
vider regarding results if ketones are positive.
• Checkyourinfusionsettubingforkinks,clogs,or
leaks. Be sure that the tubing is connected to the
cartridge correctly. If blood is noted in the tubing,
change your infusion set.
• Checkyourinsertionsiteforirritation,redness,
soreness, or swelling (signs of infection).
• Evaluatepumpfunction.Checktomakesurethat
your pump is working. Disconnect yourself from
your pump and give a “mid-air” bolus of two units,
then watch for drops to come out of the tubing.
• If your blood glucose is not lower in one hour,
give insulin by injection and change cartridge and
infusion set. Fill cartridge with insulin from a new,
unopened and properly stored vial.
• Checkyourbloodglucoseeveryhourandtreat
high blood glucose as directed by your healthcare
provider until it is within target.
• Onceyourbloodglucoseiswithintarget,moni-
tor your blood glucose levels regularly (at least 4
to 6 times per day, especially before you go to bed
and when you wake up in the morning, or as your
healthcare provider recommends) so that high or
low blood glucose levels can be identied quickly.
• Drinkatleast8to10ouncesofnon-caloricuids
(water is preferable) every 30 to 60 minutes until
blood glucose is below 250 mg/dl (14 mmol/L)
and ketones are negative.
• Adjustbasalrate(s),insulin-to-carbohydrate
ratio(s), or correction factor(s) as indicated by
your healthcare provider as necessary.
• CallCozMore®CustomerSupportwithanyques-
tions regarding your pump.

carry with you:
• Insulinsyringeorpen(rememberthatinsulinis
sensitive to temperature, so keep it out of extreme
temperatures—replace the insulin every month.)

• Foil-wrappedKetostix®
• Bloodglucosemeterandteststrips/sensors
(be sure they aren’t expired)
• Lancetsandlancingdevice
• Foodthatyouwouldusetotreatlowbloodglucose
• AAA(IECLR03)battery
• Medicalidenticationcardwithcontactinforma-
tion for your physician and signicant other
• Acopyofyourpumpprogram(basalrates,target
blood glucose, etc.)
As always, discuss with your healthcare provider any
special supplies you might need in your emergency
kit.
