Tips for Practical Pumping
Travel guidelines
e Transportation Safety Administration (TSA) has
provided guidelines for the security screening pro-
cess for people who have diabetes. ese tips are not
all-inclusive and are simply meant to provide rec-
ommendations and advice when wearing the Deltec
Cozmo® insulin pump. e guidelines are subject to
change, and you should contact specic airlines and
railways for the most current regulations.
Airport screening guidelines
• ALWAYScarrysupplieswithyouonboard.
• Insulinpumpsandsuppliesmustbeaccompanied
by insulin with the professionally printed label
identifying the medication.
• Youmusthavetheinsulinwithyouifyouarecar-
rying syringes.
• Lancets,bloodglucosemeters,andglucosetest
strips or sensors can be carried through the secu-
rity screening area.
• Ifquestioned,notifythescreenersthatyouare
wearing an insulin pump and ask if they want to
visually inspect the pump. Explain that you can’t
remove it from your body.
Preparing for your trip
Before you are scheduled to leave on your trip:
• Callorvisityourhealthcareprovideranddiscuss
any questions you have regarding your diabetes
care while you are away from home.
• Obtainwritteninstructionsforchangesoradjust-
ments you need to make while you are away from
home.
• Obtainwrittenprescriptionsforallyourmedica-
tions and supplies that you carry with you. Bring
the prescriptions with you on your trip. Ask your
physician to use generic names of prescriptions if
traveling out of the country.
• Askyourprescribingphysicianforaletterstat-
ing you use an insulin pump and are required to
carry the listed items (all your prescriptions and
supplies).
• eAmericanDiabetesAssociation(ADA)can
give you the names of healthcare providers near
your destination (1-800-DIABETES).
• Contactyourhealthinsurancecarrierandask
what you need to do if you require medical atten-
tion while traveling. Find out what your coverage
is inside and out of the country. Ask if you need
supplemental healthcare insurance for the length
of time you will be traveling. Your travel agent may
be able to help you with travel insurance.
Supplies for travel
• Yourusualrapid/shortactinginsulin(morethan
you think you will need) in original box with pre-
scription label
• Newvialofintermediateorlong-actinginsulinin
original box with prescription label (for emergen-
cy use)
• Insulinsyringes/pensincaseyouneedinjections
• DeltecCozmo®insulinpumpsupplies(besureto
bring more than you would normally use for your
amount of set changes)
• AAA(IECLR03)batteries
• Suppliesforyourglucosemeter(strips/sensors,
lancets, lancing device, log book)
• Glucagon®EmergencyKit(besurethattheperson
you are traveling with knows how to administer
the Glucagon®)—check with your healthcare
provider)
• Urineketoneteststrips
• Suppliesthatyouusetotreatlowbloodsugar(glu-
cose tablets, fruit, fruit snacks, etc.)
NOTE: If traveling internationally you may not
be able to leave the plane (or ship) with fruit or
other snack foods.
• Prescriptionsforinsulinpumpsuppliesandother
medications
• Ifpossible,aspareglucosemeterandsupplies
