4. Choosing an access site and inserting the access

device

•Choose an access site. Anywhere you would normally

inject insulin can be used as an access site, including

your abdomen, hips, buttocks, upper thighs, etc.

Choose an area where you have a sufficient layer of

subcutaneous fat. Avoid areas that may be rubbed by

clothing (waistband, etc.), and stay at least 2 inches

(5cm) away from your belly button. Your healthcare

provider can help you with site selection and give

you information about properly caring for your site.

•Swab the selected access site with an antiseptic

solution. Allow it to dry. Insert the infusion set

cannula or needle according to the Instructions for Use

supplied with the infusion set. Once it is properly

inserted, apply a dressing and tape it securely into

place.

Warning: Always remove all air from the cartridge

and infusion set before starting insulin delivery.

Air bubbles in the system can slow or stop insulin

delivery. Check all connections carefully for leaks

(wrapping a tissue around connections to check for

moisture is a good technique), as leakage can slow or

stop insulin delivery to the body, and allow an

opening for contamination leading to infection. If

insulin delivery is slowed or stopped, high blood

glucose (hyperglycemia) will result.
