Troubleshooting health problems

Low blood glucose (hypoglycemia)

Blood glucose lower than target. Signs and symptoms may

include: shakiness, sweating, dizziness, cold or clammy

skin, looking pale, tingling and numbness in hands or

around lips, mood changes. Low blood glucose may lead

to loss of consciousness. Some causes of low blood glu-

cose include too much insulin given, increased activity/

exercise, decreased food/meal frequency, and alcohol con-

sumption.

Treatment: Immediately take 15 grams of fast-acting car-

bohydrate (preferably glucose tablets/gel; or juice or hard

candy), and recheck in 15 minutes. If it is still very low

(70 mg/dl [4 mmol/L] or lower) after 15 minutes, eat an-

other 15 grams of carbohydrate and recheck in 15 min-

utes. Contact your healthcare provider as needed.

You must check your BG level at least 4 to 6 times per day

(or as indicated by your healthcare provider) to be alerted

to low BG levels.

If you have frequent low blood glucose, especially if at

about the same time every day, talk to your healthcare

provider. It may be necessary to change your basal rate,

and/or adjust your bolus amounts.
