minutes. Dry the pump off with a clean towel when you
are finished. If swimming in salt water, rinse the pump in
tap water and then dry it off with a clean towel to prevent
a salt buildup on the pump’s outer shell and display.
You must use a watertight dressing on your access site
when entering the water.
Contact sports
When participating in sports, particularly contact sports,
talk to your healthcare provider about whether you need
to remove your pump. You will need to decide on an in-
sulin plan during sports.
Your basal rates, boluses &:
Your weight
Your weight can have a significant effect on how your body
uses insulin. If you experience a significant weight loss or
weight gain, contact your healthcare provider. Your basal
pattern(s) and boluses may need to be modified.
Your level of exercise
Exercise can have a significant effect on how your body
uses insulin. When you are exercising, your body may
need less insulin. If you plan on starting an exercise regi-
men (or discontinuing one), contact your healthcare pro-
vider. Your basal pattern(s) and boluses may need to be
modified.
Your growth (children & teens)
Growth spurts and the onset of puberty can have a sig-
nificant effect on blood glucose, which may significantly
affect the required total daily insulin dose. If you or your
child are experiencing problems maintaining the target
BG level, contact your healthcare provider.
Your menstrual period
Many women see a change in their BG level right before
their monthly period. If this occurs, contact your health-
care provider. They may want to designate one of the
pump’s 4 basal patterns specifically for your period, or
they may want you to use the Temporary rate feature.
Starting new medications / supplements
Certain medications can have an effect on how your body
uses insulin. This is particularly true with steroid medica-
tion like prednisone and cortisone. Always make sure that
any physician prescribing medications to you knows about
your diabetes. Then, contact your healthcare provider right
away to decide if any modifications in your basal patterns
or boluses are needed.
